About Enlightec

A computer company across three towns — Brighton, Illinois, Alton, Illinois and DeSoto, Missouri — doing the same three things since 1997: writing software businesses depend on, supplying the machines it runs on, and answering the phone when something stops.

Enlightec began in Alton in 1997 and was incorporated in Madison County, Illinois in 2002. It now works from three bases — Brighton, Illinois, Alton, Illinois and DeSoto, Missouri — covering both sides of the river. The region it serves is full of organisations that need real engineering but are too small to keep a systems programmer, a network engineer and a hardware buyer on staff. That gap is the business.

The work has stayed deliberately broad. A customer who needs a switch configured this week may need an application written next quarter and a server specified the year after, and there is real value in those three jobs being done by people who remember the first one. That is why the trademark filing covers both a services class and a goods class: it describes how the work actually arrives.

Enlightec builds and maintains both software and hardware, and offers its software under GNU GPL v3 as well as under proprietary licence. Which one applies is decided per engagement, in writing, before work starts — not discovered later.

Build it to be handed over

Documentation, source and credentials belong to the customer. A system nobody but us can maintain is a defect, not a retention strategy.

Diagnose before replacing

Hardware gets replaced when the evidence says so. “Try a new one” is a way of spending your money to avoid doing the work.

Standards over fashion

Plain HTML, portable code, documented protocols, open formats. Anything we build should still resolve when the current toolchain is out of favour.

Say what it will cost

Written specifications, written quotes, written scope. Where something is uncertain we say it is uncertain rather than pricing the uncertainty in quietly.

Raymond S. Stillwell

An attorney of more than forty years in Illinois, Missouri and Colorado — real estate, business and financial law, from company formation and tax planning through contracts, finance, environmental matters and litigation. Founding shareholder and director of Alton Steel, Inc., and President of Green Investment Group, Inc. Degrees from Illinois Wesleyan University and Vanderbilt University School of Law.

He is the reason Enlightec engagements arrive with the commercial and contractual side already thought through, not bolted on afterwards.

Andrew Stillwell

Running Enlightec since 1997 and administering computer systems since 1991 — Windows Server, Linux and macOS; C and C++ down to kernel internals; TCP/IP written at the socket level rather than consumed through a framework. Author of MedPharm, Enlightec’s ERP for pharmaceutical operations.

He is also the engineer who turns up. The person who quotes your work is the person who does it, which is the whole argument for hiring a shop this size.
